The heyday of Japanese pacifism

Unlike the first half of Japan’s history, anti-war and peace activities during the second half of Japan’s history were influenced by Christian teachings brought from Europe and the US. However, public anti-war thinking, renunciation of war and pacifism during this period did not take a single form. Rather, they were linked with such issues as democracy, socialism, liberalism and Christianity, which shaped the different strands of anti-war thinking.

There were two heydays of Japanese pacifism in the second half of Japan’s history. The first wave was during the Russo-Japanese War, and the second wave followed World War II. Masao Ota argued that until the Russo-Japanese War, Japanese anti-war movements since the Meiji period had been very weak and thus there was little need to write about pacifism except for the theory of peace proposed by Tōkoku Kitamura (1868–1894) (Ota 1969: 94). This section attempts to illustrate the nature of pacifist thought in the two waves and identify their differences as well as common elements of Japanese attitudes towards peace and war in previous periods.
